England boss Roy Hodgson has spoken about the decision to select Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend instead of Arsenal’s Theo Walcott in his provisional 26-man squad for Euro 2016.
Townsend moved to Newcastle from Tottenham in January, mainly because he wanted to play regularly in order to earn a place in the England squad and it looks like his decision has paid off.

As reported by London24, Hodgson said that he chose Townsend over Walcott because he has been playing regular football in the North East whilst Walcott has often found himself sitting on the Arsenal substitute’s bench.
He said:
Andros was unlucky to lose his place in the squad when he wasn’t getting a regular game and he’s gone to Newcastle, got a regular game, and done very well there. Theo unfortunately has not got such a regular game over the last few months and has had a few problems with injury. It’s a tough decision of course but it’s one you have to take.
There is still a chance that Townsend may not make the final 23-man squad. The fact that only seven defenders were selected means that it’ll be three players from the combined 16 midfielders and forwards who miss out, so the Newcastle man will need to impress in order to be on the plane to France.
