Newcastle make the lengthy trip to Southampton this weekend, in search of a crucial three points to aid their survival bid.
Last weekend the Magpies were dealt a hammer blow to their chances of survival by Norwich City, who netted in the 93rd minute to secure a 3-2 win and to move six points clear of Newcastle in 19th.
There was one positive, however, as Aleksandar Mitrovic bagged a brace from the bench. Martin Olsson’s strike dampened spirits among the Geordie faithful, but there is still hope.
Rafa Benitez will look to get Newcastle’s relegation fight back on track at St Mary’s on Saturday.
In the reverse fixture between the sides, on the opening day of the season, Gini Wijnaldum was on the scoresheet for the first time in a black and white shirt, though the Magpies were soon pegged back by a late effort by substitute Shane Long.
There has been plenty of speculation ahead of the game regarding Wijnaldum’s place in the starting eleven and whether Benitez will focus on starting experienced players, rather than the in-form Mitrovic.
With Fabricio Coloccini back from injury to solidify the defence, a 4-4-2 formation should be deployed as Newcastle look much more effective with two up front.
Here is my preferred line-up to face Southampton. Let us know your thoughts below. Would you change any of my selections?
