Coloccini injury “not as bad as has been reported”

Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini’s injury is still in contention to start in the Magpies’ next game against Stoke City, after the club confirmed his injury is not as bad as first feared.

The club’s official website released a statement last night confirming that the Argentinian suffered a slight calf strain during the club’s recent training camp in La Manga.

The 34-year-old underwent a scan and the results showed the strain is not as bad as first reported.

The club statement read: “Newcastle United can confirm that captain Fabricio Coloccini suffered a slight calf strain during the club’s recent training camp in La Manga.

“The Argentine defender subsequently underwent a scan, the results of which have shown that the injury is not as bad as has been reported.

“The club’s medical staff are working hard with Coloccini to try to ensure the centre-back is available for selection at Stoke City in eight days’ time (Wednesday, March 2).”

With Chancel Mbemba, Paul Dummett and Kevin Mbabu all still expected to remain on the sidelines, and Steven Taylor only having just returned to full fitness, the news will definitely be welcomed by the club.

Should Coloccini miss the next game with Stoke, Newcastle could hand the captaincy to Jonjo Shelvey, who lead the team out during their recent friendly win over Lillestrom – a move which several fans have called for.
