As reported by Mark Douglas of The Chronicle, Newcastle United are very keen to strike a deal with West Brom for Saido Berahino, Kevin Kilbane believes ‘it’s up to Peace and Ashley now’.
Tony Pulis hinted the right fee for the England-U21 player would all but guarantee him becoming a Newcastle player, the deal is now being described as ‘inevitable’. West Bromwich’s asking price of £18m would break Newcastle’s transfer record which has stood since the £17m capture of Michael Owen in 2005. Kevin Kilbane thinks the deal will be decided between Chairmans of the two parties involved. Berahino missed the Baggies FA Cup win over Bristol City through illness and after the match Pulis admitted he had no say in the decision to keep or sell the young star.
Puis said in his post-match press conference:
The chairman will decide whether Saido goes or stays. The chairman will make decisions, financially.
As much as it’s the player, it’s the financial deal and like I say, we’ll leave it with Jeremy to sort it. He was playing (against Bristol City). If he hadn’t been ill, he’d have been playing.
Newcastle will be keen to sign Berahino before the trip to Vicarage Road on Saturday, with West Brom unlikely to take a cut price deal. The Burundi-born striker shot to fame last season and has scored 22 goals for the Baggies.
