Newcastle United played host to European hopefuls West Ham United at St James’ Park this afternoon, looking to build on the 3-3 draw with Manchester United.
The Magpies made one change, Jonjo Shelvey making his debut for the seemingly out-going Cheick Tiote.
Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges, with Shelvey taking no time to adapt to his new surroundings. Mitrovic was busy up top showing some brilliant hold up play to bring the likes of Wijnaldum and Perez into play.
Shelvey fed the ball to the feet of Wijnaldum, who knocked the ball into Perez’s path on the edge of the box. The Spaniard tucked the ball into the corner giving Adrian no chance.
Minutes later, Shelvey showed exactly why Newcastle United paid £12-million for him. Switching the ball to Janmaat, who fed Wijnaldum. He slid in to make it nine for the season.
Chancel Mbemba started the second half in the worst way possible, playing a sloppy backpass which Jelavic pounced on to make it 2-1. But the game would end that way, with Newcastle United moving out of the relegation zone.
