Reports in The Daily Mail suggest Steve McClaren will be rewarded with an EIGHT year contract if he leads Newcastle United to FA Cup glory or a top 8 finish. Newcastle haven’t won a trophy in 47 years and following the Capital One Cup third round defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, this is McClaren’s last chance to trigger the clause this season.
The deal was set in McClaren’s original 3 year deal, signed in June. This would be The Magpies second manager on such a contract, with Alan Pardew being rewarded with a similar extension following his top 5 finish in 2012.
The Magpies are perched in a precarious position following a difficult season, sitting just 2 points above rivals Sunderland and languishing in the bottom 3.
Newcastle United will face Watford in the FA Cup this Saturday, and McClaren insists his side will field a strong team in an effort to appease fans, who haven’t seen their side progress past the initial round in 4 years.
However with a crunch match against former title rivals Manchester United just 3 days later, questions have been raised by some sections of the support over prioritisation of the cup or Premier League survival.
