L’Equipe, France’s leading sports newspaper, is reporting that Newcastle United have made an enquiry over Abdoulaye Doucoure of Stade Rennais.
The 23-year-old has appeared 13 times for the club so far in Ligue 1, but looks to be set to move. Watford, Leicester and Newcastle are all reportedly interested in making the youngster part of their squad.
Watford had a bid rejected in the summer, rumoured to be around £7.3-million, however no deal materialised before the closing of the window.
This is the fourth Ligue 1 player to have serious links over a move to Newcastle United, following reports on Alexandre Lacazette, Michy Batshuayi and Henri Saivet. It would appear that Steve McClaren and Graham Carr are returning to the Toon’s old haunt of the French division having seen mixed success in the past.
Newcastle are in desperate need of new bodies in January, finding a threadbare and lacklustre squad hanging on to Premier League hopes. There is a very real chance NUFC will slip back down to the Championship if new players aren’t brought in.
