It’s the news Newcastle fans have wanted to hear. Steve McClaren has confirmed to The Chronicle that Gini Wijnaldum would continue in the number 10 role for The Magpies.
Since joining from PSV Eindhoven in the summer, Wijnaldum has played a wide left role in a 4-4-2 formation, much to the frustration of some Toon fans. However, having played a key role in such an impressive performance against Arsenal, McClaren will allow Gini the chance to further impress.
The number 10 role has troubled Newcastle for months, with De Jong and Perez struggling to fulfil the demand of the role.
McAllen confirmed post-match that he thought the renewal of the 4-2-3-1 had looked threatening against the Gunners.
People can say it was a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1. I think it was a little lopsided at times, but we set up for the opponent, as we do in every game.
We tried to play to our strengths, which I think they did . We’ve got Sissoko, Wijnaldum, Perez and Mitrovic, who are a handful.
They can be a real handful on their day. We rotated them around a bit, and that’s something we’ll certainly use in the future.
