# Newcastle suffer blow in Shelvey pursuit

Newcastle target Jonjo Shelvey has told Swansea that he does not want to move away from the Liberty Stadium and wants to fight for his place at the club, reports [the Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/newcastle-united/latest-nufc-news/newcastle-hit-in-bid-for-jonjo-shelvey-as-england-international-wants-to-stay-at-swansea-1-7649544).

The Magpies have been heavily linked with the England international in recent weeks, as Steve McClaren looks to strengthen his midfield options ahead of a relegation battle in the second half of the season.

It has been a bleak season so far for the Swans, with the dismissal of Garry Monk and a dip in form leaving them in 17th place, as well as star man Shelvey losing a lot of momentum.

However, there is no doubting the powerful midfielder’s abilities and Newcastle were hoping to make a move for the out of favour 23-year-old, but it is now unlikely with the player’s focus solely on Swansea.

United will hope to overtake Shelvey’s Swansea in the not-so-distant future as they look to climb out of the relegation zone quickly.
