Newcastle United are understood to be working on securing their first signing of the January transfer window, with Bordeaux star Henri Saivet on the club’s radar.
According to The Chronicle’s chief sports writer Lee Ryder, the Magpies are ‘poised to make a swoop’ for Saivet and could have the deal wrapped up early in the window.
The 25-year-old currently plies his trade for Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux, where he established himself as a first-team regular. He had made 22 appearances for Les Girondins this season, including five in the Europa League, and has netted four times in the process.
While his goalscoring record is not exactly eye-catching for a capable winger, Saivet has spent the majority of his playing time this season in central midfield (19/22 appearances, including eight at defensive midfield).
The Chronicle have also revealed a number of other Premier League clubs are monitoring the Senegalese star, with Everton and Stoke City both sending scouts to attend his matches this calendar year, but it is Newcastle who are in pole position to land Saivet next month.
Saivet is still under contract at Bordeaux, until the summer of 2017, so a cash deal will have to be negotiated, but Newcastle should be able to secure a cut-price fee with just 18 months remaining on his contract.
