McClaren praises Magpies’ mental toughness

Steve McClaren has heaped the praise upon the mentality of his resurged Newcastle players, following a 1-1 draw vs Aston Villa which saw the club acquire seven points from their last three games.

The Magpies were made to rue multiple missed chances from Siem de Jong, Gini Wijnaldum and Ayoze Perez in a game that was played in treacherous conditions.

But, McClaren, who was under immense pressure just a few weeks ago, insists that his team wouldn’t have gotten anything from the game if it happened earlier this season.

Speaking after the game (quoted by the Chronicle), the former England boss said:

“Ten games ago we’d have lost that one. We’d have gotten frustrated and disappointed.”

We are sticking together as a team, maybe we won’t win every game but we’re more competitive than most.

“The last three games there have been huge steps forward.”

United were unlucky to have to settle for a draw, but they do remain in the top six of the Premier League’s form guide. Onwards and upwards for the Toon!
