Newcastle have registered their interest in Stade Rennais left-back Cheick M’Bengue, according to French media outlet RMC Sport.
The 27-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, and the Magpies are believed to have made contact with the French club over a possible deal.
However, there is stiff competition for the Senegalese defender, with Watford and Middlesbrough also monitoring his progress. Clubs from Germany and Turkey are in the running for his signature too, as per RMC.
M’Bengue has made 62 appearances for his parent club since joining for a reported fee of €2 million in 2013. He represented France at U-21 level, but decided to declare for Senegal back in 2011, where he has gone on to appear 20 times for the national team.
Newcastle currently have left-backs Paul Dummett, Massadio Haidara and Kevin Mbabu on their roster, but the club are still looking to strengthen their squad in all positions.
