According to AMK, Newcastle United are set to rival West Bromwich Albion for the loan signature of Besiktas’ winger Kerim Frei.
Frei left Fulham, the club he joined as a 16-year-old, to join the Turkish giants for a reported fee of €3.5m in 2014.
The Turkish international has played 107 times throughout his relatively short career, scoring seven goals.
Besiktas are yet to comment on rumours linking Frei with a move away from Istanbul, however, we do know that Fulham still have a stake in the player, with Martin Jol saying this to Sky Sports when the then 19-year-old departed the West London club:
As a club, because of the structure of the deal, we are still invested in his future and what we believe he’ll be able to achieve in time. I know he’ll be much happier playing, so we wish him all the best
Newcastle have been linked with another striker/winger in recent days, Rubin Okotie of 1860 Munich. Yet troubling rumours that Steve McClaren will struggle for funds in the January window continue to circulate.
