According to German newspaper Bild, Newcastle United are eyeing up a January move for 28-year-old 1860 Munich striker Rubin Okotie.
Okotie impressed the watching Magpies’ scouts this weekend by scoring a hat trick during 1860’s 4-4 draw with Paderborn.
The Austrian forward joined the 2.Bundesliga side from Austria Vienna in 2014, and he has bagged an impressive 22 goals in 45 appearances during his time at the Allianz Arena.
Newcastle do have a past of dipping down the leagues to gamble on promising players such as Ayoze Perez and, with Mike Ashley reportedly not willing to spend big this January, the transfer seems plausible.
However, the major sticking point of the move would be Okotie’s age and his inexperience in a major European league.
Right now, the striker is playing in the German second tier, and, with Newcastle in the midst of a relegation battle, the club need to sign proven players who can come in and make an instant impact.
