Steve McClaren refused to offer any excuses towards Newcastle’s abysmal 3-0 defeat to a Leicester City side who ran riot at St. James’ Park.
The under-pressure gaffer had some strong words of criticism for his Toon ensemble, labelling the defeat as “the worst performance of the season”.
The Magpies were undeniably played off the park by Claudio Ranieri’s men – a combination of no attacking threats and woeful defending were major factors in the worrying defeat.

An extremely disheartened McClaren voiced his thoughts on the outcome of the game in a post-match press conference (quoted by the Chronicle).
Disappointed is probably not the word, it was our worst performance of the season. We talked about the last five or six games, and in the last performance(s) we have seen progression.
I said it’s going to be slow and we would get setbacks along the way before we get that consistency and today was a perfect example of that. Granted I thought the opponents were excellent.
Following a performance that was booed by many fans, Newcastle are barely dangling above the dark realms of the unforgiving relegation zone.
With tough games against Crystal Palace, Liverpool and Spurs on the horizon, the Toon faithful are losing patience with McClaren and company.
We need better displays and results, pronto!
