Newcastle United are set to rival Aston Villa for the January signing of Paris Saint Germain goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu, according to French outlet Le10 Sport.
Sirigu has found himself playing second fiddle to Kevin Trapp for Laurent Blanc’s side this season – and The Parisians have reportedly told the 28-year-old that he is free to leave the Parc des Princes should he receive a suitable offer
Newcastle have been linked with a wide range of goalkeepers since the club’s No 1 Tim Krul suffered a season ending cruciate knee-ligament injury whilst on international duty with the Netherlands in October.
United’s third-choice goalkeeper Rob Elliot has deputised admirably between the sticks following Krul’s injury. However, the Irishman’s ongoing thigh-issue, alongside second-choice stopper Karl Darlow’s injury problems, means that Steve McClaren could explore the option of bringing in another keeper during the January window.

Sirigu has made 178 appearances for PSG since joining the Ligue 1 giants from Palermo in 2011 – and the 6ft 4in stopper would present Newcastle with a top quality candidate to ease their troublesome goalkeeping predicament.
The Magpies could face further competition for Sirigu’s services, with Serie A side AC Milan also believed to be amongst the frontrunners for the Italian international’s signature.
