It has been revealed that the late Sir Bobby Robson made an effort to sign a young Wayne Rooney during his early Everton days.
Since making the move to Manchester United back in 2004, the Liverpudlian striker has gone on to do mesmerising things. Rooney has scored 172 goals in 351 appearances for the Red Devils, along with 50 goals in 108 caps for England.
England’s all-time leading goalscorer, now aged 30, made the announcement whilst speaking at a charity auction that was raising money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and others.

Sir Bobby has been a cult icon around Tyneside for many years now, and in the middle of commemorating the legend, Rooney said the following (as reported by the Daily Mail):
Sir Bobby Robson was a football man to the core and someone who once tried to sign me for Newcastle.
It was widely reported at the time that the Magpies were interested in Rooney, but nothing ever surfaced, until now.
The Manchester United attacker then went on to toast the footballing legend, whose charity has raised upwards of £700,000 since its establishment four years ago.
I can think of no cause more relevant than Sir Bobby’s Auction and Sir Bobby Robson Foundation to receive one of only 50 special commemorative England shirts to mark the achievement.
Everything could have been much, much different had Newcastle gotten this deal over the line. We miss you, Sir Bobby!
