Newcastle have identified Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Tom Lees as the answer to their defensive woes, with a January bid on the horizon.
According to the Mirror, the sturdy 24-year-old is a victim of a massive tug of war between the Magpies and Norwich City. Aston Villa and Sunderland are also interested in signing the former Leeds player.
The former England U-21 international joined Sheffield Wednesday last year for £350,000, and he played his part in knocking Steve McClaren’s side out of the Capital One Cup in September.

Rated at £7m, Lees has been one of the outstanding performers in Carlos Carvalhal’s Wednesday side this season – and the Owls boss is desperate for his best defender to remain at the club.
The Toon have a relentless battle on their hands if they want to acquire the services of the solid rock that is Tom Lees. Not only are Wednesday reluctant to let him go, but there is stiff competition for his signature.
Lees is said to be McClaren’s top target for the upcoming January transfer window, with a high-quality winger also on the shopping list.
The club most certainly have sufficient enough funds to enable them to purchase the centre-half, but they will not be forced into paying an unnecessarily high fee.
