# Manu Riviere to be handed clean slate

Steve McClaren has told Emmanuel Riviere that he is prepared to offer the Frenchman a fresh start to his Newcastle career, after a difficult debut season in England, according to [The Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-striker-manu-riviere-could-10301443?).

Riviere arrived on Tyneside last summer for a fee in the region of £6million, on the back of a successful season for AS Monaco – outscoring Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez. While expectations were high, the Geordie faithful soon came crashing back down to Earth as Riviere struggled in his first few appearances in a black and white jersey.

The emergence of Ayoze Perez, coupled with Papiss Cisse’s impressive goalscoring form when available, pushed Riviere further down the pecking order, though, he did still manage 23 appearances – only scoring once.

Despite his miserable debut season, Steve McClaren has reportedly handed him a clean slate, even though he’s unlikely to play with Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic forming a dynamic partnership – with four goals between them in the last three games.

Any return for Riviere is still quite a distance away, with McClaren [stating](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-striker-manu-riviere-could-10301443?) he’s likely to be sidelined for another two weeks through injury.

> Manu is two or three weeks away.

“Karl Darlow is four weeks away and Gabriel Obertan is three or four weeks. They are a little bit far away at the moment,” McClaren added.
