Newcastle could face a January battle to keep hold of fan favourite Ayoze Perez, with Mauricio Pochettino’s North Londoners rumoured to be eyeing a move for the talented young Spaniard.
The Shields Gazette report that Spurs, who had a summer enquiry for Perez rebuffed by the Magpies, are keen to add the gifted Spain Under-21 international to their ranks during the January window.
Newcastle signed the relatively unknown Perez from Spanish Segunda Division outfit Tenerife for £1.5m during the summer of 2014, with the Spaniard’s acquisition initially viewed as one for the club’s development squad.

Despite the lowly expectations surrounding his arrival, the technically gifted Perez quickly forced his way into the first-team picture by dazzling Newcastle fans with a series of impressive cameo displays from the bench.
Perez’ unprecedented rise through United’s ranks continued during the 2014/15 campaign as the former Tenerife man seized his opportunities and soon established himself as an integral member of United’s starting XI, notching seven crucial goals as the Magpies avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Following the summer transfer window’s closure at the end of August, Perez spoke about Spurs’ interest.
There was interest from Tottenham, especially Pochettino. It’s a very nice compliment for me. In the end it did not work because Newcastle considered me too important and would not let me leave.
After a gradual introduction to the starting XI under new head coach Steve McClaren, Perez has built upon last season’s impressive performances by netting fine strikes in United’s latest home fixtures against Chelsea and Norwich City.
The Spaniard’s flourishing partnership with Aleksandar Mitrovic has got United fans’ mouths watering and supporters will pray that the Magpies refuse to entertain any winter offers for one of their hottest young prospects.
