Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman says he is ready to play in the Premier League, and that he won’t let his side down if called upon.
Injuries to Tim Krul and Karl Dunlow have led to Woodman being recalled from a loan spell at Crawley Town, although he has only been brought back as a backup option to Rob Elliot.
Woodman says that the injuries to his teammates are unfortunate, but that it provides him with an opportunity that he is ready for, having played regular football at Crawley this season.
That’s football and these things happen unfortunately for Tim. I was playing football at Crawley and really enjoying it, and I can’t thank the manager, fans and everyone at the club enough because they gave me my chance in the Football League. I’m delighted that I was able to get 12 games for them and now I’ve got to look at this as a positive for me. I know I’ll be number two but now, after the experience I’ve gained, if a chance does come along and the gaffer needs me in the starting XI, I’ll be doing my very best to take it and show what I can do.
Newcastle have been hit by an injury crisis in the goalkeeper department. First-choice stopper Krul will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his ACL while on international duty with Holland. Meanwhile, Karl Darlow will miss about a month of action with an ankle injury, which means Rob Elliot will be between the sticks in the immediate future.
