Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez is staying grounded despite reports that Manchester United are interested in taking him away from St James’ Park.
The Chronicle state that the Red Devils are keeping tabs on the 22-year-old, who arrived at Newcastle from Tenerife for less than £2 million – but Perez is not fazed by such suggestion and knows he has to work hard and stay humble for his career to progress.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper MARCA, Ayoze said:
We all know Sir Alex Ferguson and how big he was for football.
They are big words that I have to prove so much.
He’s speaking of Sir Alex Ferguson’s rumoured admiration for him, which could influence the Red Devils into a move, given the Scotsman’s current influence at Old Trafford.
Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the young frontman and tried to pry him away from the club on deadline day this summer but had their efforts completely rejected. Perez described Pochettino’s interest in him as “a nice compliment”.
He’s only scored once this season – but it was a beauty, coming against Chelsea when he controlled the ball with a deft touch before volleying it in off the post to the despair of a helpless Asmir Begovic.
