# Benik Afobe being pursued by Newcastle

Newcastle are still chasing Benik Afobe and a January bid is in the works, according to [ESPN sources](https://www.espnfc.com/story/2659167/wolves-striker-benik-afobe-being-tracked-by-newcastle-united).

The former Arsenal striker has majorly impressed since leaving the Premier League – scoring 27 goals in 48 games for MK Dons and Wolves respectively.

Newcastle reportedly enquired about the prolific striker in the summer, but Kenny Jackett was desperate to keep hold of his star man.

Afobe is a former England U-21 international and has attracted interest from a number of English clubs.

Norwich had three bids rejected for the striker in the summer, whilst Aston Villa enquired about the player.

Norwich’s third bid was up to £8m but Wolves didn’t bulge. This shows Afobe’s importance to the club and if Newcastle were going to sign him, it would require a big offer.

Steve McClaren is desperate to sign a striker in January because of Newcastle’s repeated failure to put the ball in the back of the net this season.

Charlie Austin remains a top target and with Papiss Cisse seeking a move away from the club, a striker should be our top priority come January.

It will be interesting to see how this one materialises. Will Mike Ashley stump up big money in order to sign Afobe?
