Newcastle are reportedly planning on making a January move for Schalke defender Joel Matip.
The Cameroon international featured at the World Cup last year, playing against the likes of Neymar and Luka Modric.
It is believed Newcastle nearly placed a €10m bid for the centre-back during the summer transfer window, however opted to sign Chancel Mbemba instead.
The 24-year-old has made 25 appearances for his country since his first call up in 2010, and has scored one goal. He has made 226 appearances for Schalke sincce signing his first professional contract with them in 2009.
Newcastle are also reported to be interseted in Vfl Wolfsburg defender Robin Knoche, however talks are at a very early stage.
Knoche is a year younger than Matip, however does not have the same international experience, having never appeared for his native Germany. He has made 92 appearances for Wolfsburg, winning both the DFB-Pokal and the DFB-Supercup with them.
