Newcastle rather controversially suffered their first home defeat off the season, at the hands of Arsenal, with plenty of the blame being shifted onto referee Andre Marriner – who brandished a red card to Aleksandar Mitrovic early on for a foul on Francis Coquelin.
Mitrovic and Coquelin both went for a 50-50 ball, but the Arsenal midfielder beat the Serbian to the ball and took the full brunt of his challenge. While there is no question as to whether it was a foul, a red card was definitely harsh – though it seemed Marriner had it in for Mitrovic from the start.
This was a “foul” by Mitrovic.

Arsenal took the lead in the second half after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deflected effort found the back of Tim Krul’s net.

While we still wait for our first win of the season, the performances have been promising and today is no exception, even with ten men we still kept Arsenal at bay for the majority of the game.
