# Don’t rule out another arrival

Steve McClaren admitted Newcastle were ‘not chasing’ another signing last week, but [The Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/newcastle-united-finished-transfer-window-9911105) claim Charlie Austin and Aymen Abdennour could still arrive on Tyneside – but on one condition.

Last week, McClaren was quoted by [the Northern Echo](https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/13619317.McClaren___I_don_t_expect_us_to_make_any_more_signings_in_this_transfer_window_/) stating: *“I’m very pleased with what we have got, very pleased,”*

> *“I think that’s it for now, but how many times have you heard, ‘That’s it for now’ with ten days of the window to go?*

*“We are not expecting, we are not chasing anything. We are not trying to make things happen. Usually with ten days to go things might happen, but at the moment we are delighted with what we have got.*

*“Let’s get to work with them. That’s the key thing now – they’re in, let’s get them working and let’s get them playing.”*

Austin attracted attention from a number of Premier League clubs after his fine goalscoring form last season (*scoring 18 in 35 appearances*) and has begun this season like he finished the last – with four goals in his opening four Championship games.

Newcastle are among the clubs reportedly interested in landing the 25-year-old this summer, but QPR’s £15million valuation has deterred the Magpies from tabling a formal offer. Should the R’s lower their asking price, a move could materialise – though it would then all rely on a respectable offer for Papiss Cisse emerging.

The situation is similar with Tunisia international Aymen Abdennour, as AS Monaco’s lofty demands are currently too high for Newcastle. Though, according to the [Sunday Times](https://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/sport/football/article1597163.ece), Newcastle and Aston Villa have both offered personal terms to the 26-year-old, after Barcelona pulled out of the race.

His agent is still searching for a Champions League move for his client, but the Times state he is ready to join Newcastle or Villa should he fail with his efforts. He has also been offered to Chelsea as an alternative to John Stones, but it’s unclear whether the Blues hold an interest in Aymen. The Villans are reportedly willing to match Monaco’s £18million price tag while we want to negotiate a lower fee which could prove to be problematic.

One potential stumbling block is that [Mercato 365](https://www.mercato365.com/infos-clubs/monaco/monaco-valence-lorgne-abdennour-1260508.shtml)claim Valencia and Juventus are back in the race for Abdennour – which would dent Newcastle’s chances severely.

Should Newcastle reach an agreement with Monaco and the player, this will be a **huge** coup and arguably our biggest signing of the summer.
