# Mehdi Abeid nears exit door

Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid has traveled to Greece to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed move to Panathinaikos and could be unveiled as early as tonight, according to the [Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/newcastle-united/latest-nufc-news/mehdi-abeid-in-athens-for-to-panathinaikos-medical-1-7415845).

Abeid spent the 2013/14 season on loan at the Greek giants, making 38 appearances and scoring ten in the process. The Greens attempted to sign Mehdi permanently last summer but failed to agree a fee with Newcastle, so he remained on Tyneside.

After a season in the fringes at St James’ Park, Abeid has decided to call time on his Newcastle career and move away. Steve McClaren allowed the 23-year-old to find himself a new club after deeming him surplus to requirements.

He had already traveled to Germany earlier this month to finalise a move to Fortuna Dusseldorf but failed to agree personal terms with the Bundesliga II side.

Haris Vuckic is another Newcastle player on the verge of leaving, with Rangers emerging as the favourites for his signature.
