In their 2nd game of the season, Newcastle had a long travel to South Wales to play Garry Monk’s impressive Swansea side. An unchanged starting eleven from our opening 2-2 draw v Southampton was deployed by Steve McClaren.
Newcastle were under the cosh right from the get-go and it wasn’t long until Swansea opened the scoring. An unorganised back four played Bafetimbi Gomis onside and he easily took the ball around goalkeeper Tim Krul to make it 1-0 Swansea.
Jefferson Montero was looking dangerous all game and he caused Dutch right-back Daryl Janmaat a tonne of problems. Janmaat got an early yellow card twenty minutes in, and that gave Montero license to use his electrifying pace and exploit Janmaat’s cautiousness – and it soon paid off as the right-back stupidly got a second yellow card – and Newcastle were down to ten men.
Mbemba went to right back and a strange looking 4-5-0 formation was implemented. Steven Taylor came on at half-time, replacing an injured Sissoko. Early on in the second half, Swansea made it 2-0 through Andre Ayew. He outjumped Fabricio Coloccini and fired a header into the back of the net.
The game would finish 2-0 to Swansea – a very convincing win for Monk and his men. Here’s the match in pictures:
