# Newcastle send scouts to watch Championship defender

Newcastle sent scouts to watch highly-rated Leeds United defender Sam Byram over the weekend, [according to reports](https://whatculture.com/sport/newcastle-send-scouts-to-watch-8m-rated-championship-youngster.php).

The young Englishman is considered as one of the best young defenders outside of the Premier League and has been long sought-after by top-tier sides.

Everton, as well as rivals Sunderland have been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old right-back, who impressed Steve McClaren last season as he had a close eye on his progress while managing former club Derby County.

Byram has made 120 career appearances for Leeds, scoring 17 goals which is a decent return from his position, and is also a danger from set plays and dead-ball situations.

Having released Ryan Taylor at the start of the summer, Newcastle don’t have much in terms of depth behind Daryl Janmaat at right-back, and Sam Byram could be a very wise signing for the club, as he has the potential to become and England international.

However, the asking price for the youngster is £8m, which could be an issue.
