# Newcastle join race for Liverpool target

Newcastle United have reportedly joined the race for Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey from FC Copenhagen, according to [Calcio Mercato](https://www.calciomercato.it/news/343934/calciomercato-esclusivo-per-amartey-tre-offerte-settimana-decisiva.html).

Amartey has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Marseille, Juventus and AS Roma, as well as Liverpool and Leicester, and could complete his move away from the Danish outfit as early as this weekend.

The 20-year-old – who has been likened to former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien – is currently valued at €11million by his current employers.

Newcastle are the latest side to have joined the race, as per the Italian news outlet, with Steve McClaren keen to bolster his defensive options before the transfer window slams shut. Jetro Willems, [Sam Byram](https://readnewcastle.com/2015/08/11/newcastle-send-scouts-to-watch-championship-defender/) and [Raphael Guerreiro](https://readnewcastle.com/2015/08/11/president-defends-guerreiro-valuation/) have all been linked with moves to Tyneside over the past 48 hours, but Newcastle are yet to follow up their initial interest for any defender.
