Newcastle kicked off their latest Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Europa League side Southampton – a point that many would have taken before the game.
Graziano Pelle bagged the opener after Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba gifted the Italian a free header in the middle of the box.
Newcastle battled back hard after that, Haidara’s cross deflected of Cedric and looped over Stekelenburg for it to fall nicely for Cisse who headed home from close range.
Wijnaldum then put Newcastle ahead, shortly after the break, following a pinpoint cross from wing wizard Gabriel Obertan. The Dutchman’s header rose into the top left-hand corner and St James’ Park was alight.
Late on, Newcastle conceded another headed goal as Shane Long equalised for the Saints.
