# Abeid travels to Germany ahead of move

Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid has travelled to Germany to discuss and finalise personal terms with Fortuna Düsseldorf ahead of a move to the Bundesliga II side, according to the [Shields Gazette](https://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/newcastle-united/newcastle-s-mehdi-abeid-on-brink-of-move-to-german-club-1-7389810).

Abeid impressed when called upon last season but, due to the more than adequate depth that Newcastle have in central midfield, Steve McClaren does not see a place for the Algerian international.

The decision is one that will disappoint fans (including myself) but with Wijnaldum, Sissoko, De Jong, Anita, Colback and Tiote all competing for the same three spots \[*assuming we play 4-3-3/4-2-3-1*\] it is a necessary one.

A fee for Abeid hasn’t been mentioned in any reports but, considering the stature of Flingeraner (a second tier German side), I cannot envisage the fee being very much.

The 22-year-old is expected to be the first of many departing from Tyneside, both permanently and on loan, with Steve McClaren admitting he wants a core of 20 players and the rest can leave.

“We’ll sit down and assess the squad and try and think about 18 or 20 players,” McClaren said.

“That’s who’ll we’ll pick from – they’re the ones – and we’ll decide on where the others go. Some will go out on loan, some we’ll try to sell.

“I think that conversation will come about very soon.”
