# Newcastle midfielder nearing exit

Algerian midfielder Mehdi Abeid is in ‘advanced talks’ with Bundesliga 2 side Fortuna Düsseldorf over a possible summer move away from Newcastle, according to [France Football](https://www.francefootball.fr/news/Fortuna-dusseldorf-veut-abeid/578042).

The French news outlet are reporting that the 22-year-old is nearing a move away from St James’ Park after being deemed ‘surplus to requirements’ by McClaren & Co.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the player’s future at the club in recent months, with Panathinaikos among the clubs interested. The Greek outfit attempted to sign Abeid last summer, but they couldn’t meet Newcastle’s valuation for the player and the move broke down.

Fortuna Düsseldorf have not encountered the same problem and France Football claim they will meet Newcastle’s asking price. Abeid has only featured 16 times for the club and his spell on Tyneside is close to an end, much to the disappointment of the Geordie faithful.

Though Abeid hasn’t cemented himself as a first-team regular, he was reliable when called upon last season and recorded top drawer performances against Manchester City and Liverpool (most notably).

The decision to allow him to leave is definitely an odd one, in my mind, but it’s not a decision that will damage the squad, with Wijnaldum, De Jong, Sissoko, Colback, Anita and Tiote all competing for the central midfield spots, as well as Olivier Kemen and Gael Bigirimana.
