Northampton Town striker Ivan Toney is due on Tyneside today to undergo a medical, ahead of a £400,000 move to Newcastle United.
ITV state that the 19-year-old striker was eyed up by manager Steve McClaren very early into his managerial stint at St. James’ Park, and will complete his move soon (Saturday most likely).
Toney has 13 goals in 60 appearances for Northampton since making his debut for the club in 2012, and will spend the next few years developing his game in the U21 squad.
If not, McClaren has looking into several possible loan destinations for Toney for the upcoming season so he can further his development.
Meanwhile, Newcastle unveiled their third signing of the summer yesterday – DR Congo international Chancel Mbemba. The 20-year-old arrived from RSC Anderlecht in a deal worth roughly £8million and will pocket a lucrative pay packet of £30,000-a-week – similar to Aleksandar Mitrovic’s.
Newcastle hope to complete their fourth signing of the summer shortly, but the spending will not stop there.
