# Target prefers a move to Newcastle

Newcastle target Ivan Toney would prefer a switch to the North-East amid interest from a number of Championship clubs, according to the [Daily Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-revive-florian-thauvin-transfer-6161550).

The Magpies entered negotiations with Northampton Town over the possibility of signing Toney earlier this window, but didn’t follow up their initial interest with a formal offer.

Chris Wilder, manager of the League Two outfit, spoke to BBC Radio Northampton about the 19-year-old’s future.

“There are quite a lot of things that have got to happen for a player to be transferred,” Wilder said.

“That’ll progress in its time, and if it does then we’ll deal with it. I can’t speculate what’s going to happen apart from the immediate speculation. I’ll know more soon.”

It is expected that Toney would be loaned back to Northampton as part of the deal (similar to the Lascelles/Darlow-Forest deal), in order to lower the transfer fee and aid the player’s development – something benefiting to all parties.
