# Man Utd reject Newcastle’s approach for star

Newcastle United have been knocked back in their attempts to sign England international Michael Carrick from Manchester United, reports Steve Bates of [The Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/manchester-united-reject-carrick-approach-6137134).

McClaren is still keen to add another three players to his squad – a defender, midfielder and striker – and had hoped he could lure the Geordie midfielder to Tyneside for a cut-price, as his current contract expires next summer.

However, Louis van Gaal wants to retain the 33-year-old, despite the recent arrival of Bastian Schweinsteiger and homegrown Morgan Schneiderlin, as he believes Carrick can play a key role for the Red Devils next season.

Inter Milan have also had a bid rejected for Carrick. It is believed Roberto Mancini is an admirer of Carrick after his time in the Premier League.

Newcastle fans (including myself) are definitely sceptical about this rumour as it came directly from Newcastle’s preferred media partner The Mirror (albeit their sister paper The Sunday People).
