Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has confirmed that Newcastle United are interested in signing Uruguayan striker Diego Rolan.
The 22-year-old, who netted 15 goals for Bordeaux last season, has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle this summer. Rolan also emerged as a target for Aston Villa, following the sale of Christian Benteke to Liverpool for £32.5million, but Jean-Louis has played down speculation linking him with a move to the Villans.
“I’ve never heard talk of Aston villa. They have never contacted us directly nor indirectly, via any agent, at the time of speaking,” Triaud told Mercato365.
He went on to confirm Newcastle’s interest “There has been contact with Newcastle, but never directly with us, only through intermediaries”.
Newcastle are said to be in the market for another striker to partner new arrival Aleksandar Mitrovic upfront. Charlie Austin is the club’s top target, but stiff competition and QPR’s hefty asking price has seen Newcastle turn his attention to potential alternatives.
Newcastle are now set to announce the signing of Chancel Mbemba of Anderlecht as their 3rd summer signing, joining Gini Wijnaldum and Mitrovic.
