# Mystery Bundesliga defender on radar

Chancel Mbemba is due on Tyneside today to undergo his medical and will then be unveiled as a Newcastle player tomorrow, but the club’s spending will not stop there.

Newcastle are hoping to secure another three signings after unveiling Mbemba, as well as two new additions to the development squad, as per the Chronicle.

Steve McClaren confirmed the club were hoping for more arrivals, but insisted the fans will be in for a surprise: “We’re forever working,” he said.

“People are mentioning this and that (but) believe you and me, we have a lot of names that people have not got hold of yet. We have been close with them.

“At the moment we have two in and I am sure we are looking for others. But as I say they have to be the right ones.”

The question on everyone’s lips – who will be our next arrival?

First up, the Magpies want to pursue a ‘big money’ defender to replace Crystal Palace target Fabricio Coloccini, whose current contract expires at the end of the season. Joel Matip, Aymen Abdennour and Nicolas Nkoulou have all been linked with a move to Tyneside, but Mark Douglas of the Chronicle reports it may not be any of those players.

Instead, Mark claims it will be ‘another big defender target who has slipped off the radar’ from the Bundesliga. If we’re stumping up an eight figure fee for a Bundesliga centre-back, he must be a notable name – surely?

Michael Dawson of Hull City was offered to Newcastle earlier in the window, but McClaren has decided not to pursue the former-Spurs defender.

Meanwhile, Florian Thauvin remains an option, despite publicly committing his future to Marseille. As we learnt from the Delph deal, loyalty in football is no more. Another striker (Charlie Austin) and midfielder are also on McClaren’s wish-list.

As for the development squad, Newcastle are expected to step up their efforts to sign Ivan Toney from Northampton, while Dutch trialist Dani Koks could also be snapped up after impressing Dave Watson & Co.
