# Third signing of the summer is ‘close’

Newcastle have confirmed their second signing of the summer today, Aleksaddar Mitrovic, taking their total summer spending to £27million. But the Magpies plan to carry on spending, with Marseille winger Florian Thauvin still on the club’s radar, according to the Chronicle.

Steve McClaren has not ruled out the potential arrival of the tricky French winger, despite Marseille insisting he will remain at the club.

A deal to bring in Mitrovic’s former Anderlecht teammate Chancel Mbemba is currently in the pipeline and is reportedly close. Many expect him to become the club’s third signing of the summer, though Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette reckons it could be a ‘secret signing’.

Mbemba sat out Anderlecht’s pre-season friendly with Lazio, in an attempt to force through a move to Newcastle. Anderlecht boss Besnik Hasi expects him to move this summer and confirmed last Sunday that talks were ongoing between the respective clubs for his signature.

Miles Starforth of the Shields Gazette has said that he expects another signing to be wrapped up this week that won’t necessarily be Chancel Mbemba, so that also begs the question – who is this mystery third signing that may or may not come to the club this week?

Charlie Austin still remains on the clubs radar, even after the signings of Mitrovic, while Aymen Abdennour is reportedly open to a move to Tyneside. Graeme Bailey of Goal, and formerly of Sky Sports, claims Newcastle have enquired about the availability of Dutch winger Jean-Paul Boetiüs.

Boetiüs could be available for as little as £2million this summer as he enters the final year of his contract – an attractive proposition for Newcastle who look to bolster their sub-standard wide midfield options this summer.

One player who will definitely not arrive on Tyneside this summer is Saido Berahino, after Newcastle cooled their interest in the West Brom striker as he moved on from former agent Aidy Ward. Following the arrival of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Berahino is no longer a top target for the club.
