French top tier sides Montpellier and Lille are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Mehdi Abeid, according to L’Equipe.
Newly appointed Newcastle boss Steve McClaren is reportedly prepared to allow the Algerian to depart St James’ Park as Abeid only had one year remaining on his current contract, meaning that he is available to sign pre-contracts with foreign clubs from January onwards.
Greek outfit Panathinaikos were previously interested in bringing Abeid back to eastern Europe, but they were only prepared to stump up a fee of £300,000 – way below Newcastle’s valuation.
The 22-year-old spoke to Goal.com a fortnight ago, in which he said that: “My goal next season is to go somewhere where I will get the chance to play every weekend, so that I am able to show what I can do on a regular basis.”
Abeid had a season to remember during 2014/15, in spite of his side nearly suffering the drop. He was the man of the match in his Premier League debut against Liverpool, in addition to making his international debut for the Algerian national team.
