Newcastle United will continue to pursue Charlie Austin, despite the impending arrival of Aleksandar Mitrovic from RSC Anderlecht for £13million.
Aymen Abdennour and Florian Thauvin are also still understood to be interesting the Magpies, according to Graeme Bailey of Goal and formerly of Sky Sports.
Mitrovic is expected to complete his move to Tyneside in the coming days and Austin is expected to follow suit, raising more doubt on the future of last season’s top goalscorer Papiss Cisse. The 30-year-old has reportedly held discussions with Trabzonspor, but the Turkish outfit elected not to follow up their initial interest due to his wage demands.
Austin, Abdennour and Thauvin will cost the club at least £10million each, which would take the club’s spending over £60million (when coupled with Wijnaldum, Mbemba and Mitrovic), so selling Cisse would help fund Newcastle’s shopping spree. We could well expect to see more outgoings this summer, with Mike Williamson and Remy Cabella both linked with moves away.
Newcastle hope to unveil their second signing of the summer this weekend with Mitrovic set for a medical. According to several news outlets, the Serbian hotshot is already currently in London.
