Defensive duo heading for exit door

Both Fabrizio Coloccini and Mike Williamson could be heading towards the exit door at St. James Park following the arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum on Tyneside, reports Mark Douglas from The Chronicle.

The signing of Wijnaldum marks the end of a long-running battle for Newcastle to sign the midfielder, but it could spell the end of two of Newcastle’s longest-serving players.

Coloccini has been with The Magpies since 2008, but with his contract up next summer (as per transfermarkt) he could soon be moving on from St. James’ Park. Crystal Palace are rumoured to be interested, and if Newcastle want him gone then a move down to London could be an enticing one for the Argentine.

Meanwhile, Mike Williamson could be on his way out after five and a half seasons with the club. He’s played a large quantity of games for The Magpies, although his relationship with the club may not be the best after John Carver accused him of being sent off on purpose in May.

Newcastle are being linked with a number of defenders, and if the club want to make moves for them then they will have to think about offloading players like Coloccini. Mike Douglas believes that Aymen Abdennour and Joel Matip are targets for the club this summer, while Antonio Rudiger and Nicolas Nkoulou have been linked with moves to Tyneside by other news outlets.
