# Newcastle join race for Spanish midfielder

Newcastle have joined Derby County in the race for Real Madrid midfielder Omar Mascarell, according to Pete O’Rourke of HITC (formerly of Sky Sports).

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Pride Park working under the then Derby manager Steve McClaren. During his time with the Championship club, Omar made 30 appearances and impressed McClaren & his coaching staff with his performances.

Derby are confident of landing the young Spaniard as they have an option in the loan deal to make Mascaell’s move permanent. However, stiff competition from Newcastle and Spanish outfit Deportivo de La Coruna could see them miss out.

The former can offer playing time in the Premier League, as well as the chance to reunite with McClaren, while the latter gives Omar the chance to remain in his home country.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Board of Directors are hopeful of a transfer breakthrough this weekend. According to The Chronicle, there are [bids for Florian Thauvin](https://readeverything.co/readnewcastle/2015/07/02/thauvin-bid-remains-under-consideration/) and Joel Matip on the table, while representatives from [the club have spoken with Hull City this week with regard to signing Tom Ince](https://readeverything.co/readnewcastle/2015/07/02/newcastle-hold-talks-with-hull-city/).
