Sammy Ameobi is set to accept the new contract offered to him by Newcastle United before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan deal.
According to Peter O’Rourke of ESPN, Ameobi is keen on playing regular first-team football next season and, once he has signed his new deal, he will be sent out on loan for the 2015/16 season.
Cardiff City, West Brom, Crystal Palace, Everton and even Spanish outfit Real Sociedad have all been mooted as potential destinations for the 23-year-old, but Kenny Jacket seems to have won the race for Ameobi, who will sign as a replacement for the outbound Bakary Sako.
Ameobi’s temporary departure will be met with mixed emotions by Newcastle supporters, as it is news of another playing going out, with one yet to come in.
But the move should be seen as good business by both parties. Ameobi was the subject of criticism last year after failing to deliver consistently for Newcastle, but has shown flashes of his huge potential over the past few years, including two fantastic goals last season away at Spurs and Hull City.
A year’s experience in the Championship could have a similar effect on Ameobi as a stint at Panathinaikos did for teammate Medhi Abeid, who impressed when selected last year.
Another Newcastle forward linked with a temporary move from St. James’ Park is Adam Armstrong, with Bolton reportedly showing an interest in the striker.
