Super Lig side Trabzonspor are in talks with Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote, according to Turkish news outlet LigTV.
Trabzonspor had originally set their sights on Stéphane Mbia of Europa League winners Sevilla to fill their defensive midfield void. Both clubs had agreed a fee but Mbia failed to agree personal terms with the Turkish outfit.
The club have now turned their attention to Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote, with LigTV reporting that talks between Trabzonspor and Tiote’s representatives have already begun. Provided the preliminary talks go well, the Trabzon will look to hold talks with Newcastle to negotiate a fee.
Tiote has two years remaining on his current contract and has been seeking a new deal with increased wages for the past few months – something the Magpies are reluctant to offer.
It is believed that newly appointed head coach Steve McClaren wants to keep the player, having worked together previously at Dutch club FC Twente, but his hand may be forced if a potential suitor matches Newcastle’s asking price.
It remains to be seen whether the 29-year-old will be open to a move to Turkey but, after spending almost five years in England, he may feel it is time to seek pastures new.
