VfL Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking has expressed his concerns over the future of last season’s top goalscorer Bas Dost, who’s been heavily linked with a move away from the Volkswagen Arena this summer.
Dost has attracted attention from clubs across Europe for his fine goalscoring form last season – netting 18 times in 30 appearances – and now it seems Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund have followed up their initial interest.
The former have held talks with the Dutchman after agreeing a £9million fee with Wolfsburg, according to the Chronicle, while the latter have only entered the race in the past week and are preparing an eleventh hour bid for Dost. Despite BVB’s interest, the Magpies remain confident of securing his signature.
However, Hecking has questioned why the 26-year-old would want to leave a Champions League side for the North East club.
In an interview with Wolfsburger Allegemeine, Hecking asked: “Why should he [Bas Dost] go to Newcastle? He can play Champions League with us. He won’t be able to do that at Newcastle in the upcoming years.”
He added: “We don’t want to sell anybody [this summer].”
Dost is just one of two Bundesliga players that arrive at St James’ Park this summer, amid speculation the Magpies are hoping to sign Cameroon international Joel Matip this summer.
Although, as it stands, a deal for Matip seems somewhat unlikely with Schalke general manager Horst Held claiming the 23-year-old is happy at the Veltins-Arena.
