Newcastle United are aiming to strengthen their defence by signing Ipswich Town’s Tyrone Mings, according to the Northern Echo.
The 22-year-old is a highly rated player and is attracting interest from a number of clubs in England. However, Ipswich are demanding a fee in the region of £10million for the player which may prove to be an obstacle for the Magpies.
Mings enjoyed a brilliant season for Ipswich last year in which he made 42 appearances for the Blues. Scouts from Newcastle attended many of Ipswich’s games towards the back end of last season, while there is some suggestion that he was watched by England’s coaching staff.
Mings would act as adequate cover for current left back Massadio Haidara and also come as a replacement for the departed Ryan Taylor – who used to play on both sides of the defence, as well as right-midfield.
Should Newcastle follow up their initial interest, it is more than likely that they would would propose immediately loaning Mings back to Ipswich in an attempt to reduce the transfer fee – similar to the deal agreed with Nottingham Forest for Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow last summer.
Newcastle have been on the search for a new left-back, to replace Davide Santon, and were tracking Aaron Cresswell before West Ham United made their move for him.
