Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren is preparing to swoop for Derby County’s Will Hughes, according to the Shields Gazette.
Hughes played under the former England manager last season and won the player of the season award for Derby. The England u21 international is liked by McClaren as he spoke highly of him whilst he was at Derby.
According to the Gazette, the midfielder would be keen on a move to St James’ Park and he would act as a potential replacement for Cheik Tiote, who looks set to depart this summer – despite McClaren stating he would be happy for the Ivorian to remain at St James’ Park.
However, if Newcastle are indeed thinking of placing a bid for the 20-year-old, it will have to be in the £10-15million region, as per Derby’s valuation. Newcastle’s chief scout Graham Carr is also thought to be a fan of Hughes.
Despite being just 20, Hughes has racked up over 100 appearances for The Rams and made 42 of those last season. He has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester City previously.
It seems like McClaren is targeting young British talent after reports emerged earlier this week about the Magpies’ interest in Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard. Hughes is currently in the England u21s team preparing for the start of the European Championship.
