Steve McClaren is considering a bid for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Lewis Dunk this summer, according to the Mirror.
McClaren held an interest in signing the 23-year-old during his time at Derby County and will step up his long-standing interest in Dunk as he prepares to recruit a new centre-half for next season.
Newcastle’s defence conceded the second most goals in the Premier League last season and is set for a complete overhaul this summer. Leeds United target Mike Williamson is expected to depart from St James’ Park, while at least one more central defender and a back-up right-back are expected to arrive, even with the arrival of Jamaal Lascelles from Nottingham Forest.
With uncertainty surrounding the future of Williamson and club captain Fabricio Coloccini, who has just one year left on his current deal, Dunk is emerging as an attractive target for Newcastle as they look to bolster their defensive options. Not only does he fit the club’s transfer policy, but Lewis will also boost the Newcastle’s homegrown quota.
Dunk has become an integral player to the Seagulls, playing 42 games last season and scoring six in the process, and they value him at around £5million.
