Newcastle United target Charlie Austin is now attracting interest from Liverpool, according to the Northern Echo.
Reports suggest that senior Liverpool officials have made contact with the striker’s agent about a potential move to Merseyside. This will come as a blow for the Magpies who also look like losing out on Spanish striker Juanmi to Southampton.
Along with Newcastle, a host of other clubs are in the chase for the Englishman’s signature including West Ham United and Aston Villa. However, with QPR owner Tony Fernandes expecting £15 million for the player, it remains to be seen which of those clubs would be willing to pay that fee.
While the club do have a number of strikers being scouted and enquired about, Austin remains their first choice. Newcastle had already held meetings with Austin’s representatives but are stalling over the fee.
New manager Steve McClaren will be hoping that Liverpool do not firm up their interest in the 25 year old as he looks to prepare his team for the new season.
Meanwhile, there is still strong suggestion that Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost could be on Tyneside to finalise a move to Newcastle before the end of the week, after the Magpies agreed a £9million fee with the Bundesliga outfit.
